Back to the legend
Between 1947 and 2007, the Citadelle of Namur hosted motocross events. This circuit was called the “Monaco of motocross” because of its configuration in an urban park. This was not enough to make it a legendary circuit. It is the drivers and their sporting achievements that have contributed to making it a monument. For a driver, winning in Namur was an added value in a prize list but also a pride.
The very selective layout by its technicality gave as much to the pilots, as to their motorcycles, a hard time. Over the years, adjustments had to be made to comply with the new standards of modern motocross. The reception of the teams’ infrastructures and the environmental standards had to evolve as well. It should be remembered that the Grand Prix was not held in 1984 due to the lack of homologation of the circuit by the FIM.
One of the facets of this jewel was the public. A particular atmosphere was present on this site which, by its configuration, imposed a rather long wait between two passages of riders. For this reason, a loudspeaker was set up in the Chalet du Monument, which allowed to know the facts of the race while waiting for the return on the Esplanade. You will be able to realize the specificity of this course by taking the footpath which follow the route of the circuit, which is impossible to do on foot because of its difficulties. Please read carefully the safety instructions before your departure.
